Pelvic Girdle Pain in Pregnancy.

What is pelvic girdle pain?

Pelvic pain is common in pregnancy and may be mild or severe with discomfort in your lower back, buttocks, pelvis, hips, inner thighs or front of pelvis pubic bones.

You may experience pain during walking, rolling in bed, stairs and changing positions.

Pelvic pain may occur due to changes in your posture, increase pressure on your pelvic joints and more significantly hormonal changes causing increased sensitivity and flexibility to tissues with systemic inflammatory processes in the body.

Some helpful strategies may include:

  • Strengthening exercises for specific pelvic and core muscles.

  • Keep exercising within pain limitations.

  • Activity modifications- sleeping with pillows, rolling knees together, shorter steps.

  • Reduce heavy lifting.

  • Ice and heat packs.

  • Massage & Stretching.

  • Pelvic belts & tubigrip for sensory compression.

  • Physiotherapy treatment.

Please inform your physiotherapist if you are experiencing pelvic girdle pain so exercises can be modified and tailored for you.
